Thom F. Cavalli, Ph.D.
Thom was blessed with a calling – to teach, write and practice Jungian psychology. Born and raised in New York City, he graduated Queens College with a dual major in Fine Art and Psychology. Needing to learn the wisdom traditions of other cultures, he left New York to explore the world (Egypt, India, Japan, Cambodia, New Zealand), but always came back to his first passion with fresh insights. He settled in California, obtained his doctorate in psychology and immersed himself in the rich Jungian community of San Diego. His first analytic therapy was with the esteemed Robert A. Johnson, and over the years worked with three more Jungian analysts.
These experiences formed the foundation of a 35 year therapy practice, providing many Jungian seminars and workshops, as well as publishing two major books (Alchemical Psychology, Old Recipes for Living in a New World and Embodying Osiris) and numerous articles in prestigious Jungian journals, including Psychological Perspectives, the Jung Journal, and the Journal of Jungian Scholarly Studies. Along the way, Thom, like Jung, became fascinated with alchemical psychology, a subject he’s studied for decades.
“Alchemical psychology is one of Jung’s greatest but least known contributions to the world. It is the open secret that defines a process that facilitates the natural evolution of personal and collective individuation. In therapy and coaching alchemical psychology, we learn to leverage the secrets of nature using alchemical recipes and operations, dream analysis and active imagination. Simply put we work at integrating conscious and unconscious content in realizing our purpose and meaning in life. The Philosopher’s Stone is the fulfillment of a lifetime lived deliberatively, purposefully and with joy.“
Thom has had the great privilege of teaching at Jungian Institutes (Los Angeles, Arizona, Vancouver), major universities (Cambridge UK, Chapman), magic and mystery schools (Nine Gates and McBride’s Mysterium), Theosophical and Mason Lodges, Esalen Institute, psychological associations (American Psychological Association), and the International Alchemy Conference. Thom offers Jungian therapy that includes dream analysis, psychological type, and active imagination. His latest offering is alchemical coaching to people throughout the country and around the globe via various online platforms. This unique approach utilizes the principles and operations of alchemy to facilitate natural healing to achieve one’s goals and aspirations.
